meraki is a Greek verb or adverb that can’t be directly translated into English. It means to do something with passion. No matter how difficult a task is - it is done with effort, enthusiasm, eagerness, and all your heart - a labour of love.

There is no handbook on how to ‘successfully’ live life as an actor/creative, nor is there one correct path or way of doing things. However I do believe that success leaves clues, that there is something to be learned from those who are further along in their path or achieving things that we ourselves would like to achieve. The combination of a relentless curiosity and desire to constantly grow and improve led to the birth of meraki. I had so many questions and I just knew that Brad Pitt didn’t have the answers.

meraki is a magazine that interviews emerging actors and creatives who are working across TV, film and theatre in Australia. One of the aspects we focus on, is talking about the things we often avoid discussing. Things like imposter syndrome, jealousy and how to handle the endless rejection because let’s be real, it can be roughhhh. We also discuss topics such: as self-taping and booking work; building and maintaining resilience in the face of rejection; part-time jobs and how to financially support yourself as an actor; creating your own work; mental health and life outside of acting. Each issue of the magazine focuses on one particular actor. Each issue is designed to express and reflect the individuality of the actor while maintaining consistency with the overarching design theme.

When actors, artists and creatives create, we aim to create with meraki. We have immense love for what we do and a willingness to pour ourselves into it. The title is also a reminder - that when you do things, may you always do them with meraki.

meraki - doing something with soul, creativity or love; when you put “something of yourself” into what you’re doing.
